I have the name Rausch intermarried with Schmahl in Germany and later records in N. Y. showing a marriage between Schmale and Rauchwein. Is there any significance to Rausch-Rauchwein? Is that a logical name change? Is it a clue to the possible relatedness of the two Schmale/Schmahl families? In Germany, the Schmale family is from Boerningen, Westfalen while the Schmahl family is from Frankfurt. I'm trying to reconcile DNA matches and genealogy.
Rausch and Rauchwein are two perfectly good German surnames, and I would not expect an intentional switch between them or even an unintentional one, but... one never knows for sure. Maybe I just wouldn't spend too much time on that trail unless no others are available to you.
Thank you, Richard. I'm not familiar with German naming patterns so this is helpful. One more theory moved to the back burner...:-)
