It would be much more helpful if I could see an image of the entire page, or better yet, if you could point me to where you found these images.
Here is what I can see now, although I might change my mind if I can view the rest of the pages. Karl Witt, Baumeister [? builder], Sohn der + Müllers zu Schadow [The pastor used the + mark as an abbreviation for verstorbenen (deceased).] Charlotte Beater geb. [nèe] Letz, Wittwe des verstorbenen [deceased] Müllers in Schadow Ferdinand Witt Alexander Wilhelm der Serifers [?] Carl Witte [I can't find any viable occupation for this word. Finding the father in other records would probably help. Gottfried Ferdinand Witt, Müllermeisters Sohn Schadow |

Once again, I thank you Bob. That's marvellous, and so helpful.
The Alexander Wilhelm unknown word is the same, I think, as in another record : ![]() Edward was Alexander's father Karl's brother, if that's relevant. Other records of Carl Witt: ![]() ![]() ![]() The records are in pages of baptisms and marriages in the Latvian Archives- 'Latvian Lutheran Church' records and 'Lutheran Church records Outside Latvia' (ie. Lithuania- Shadow/Seduva), too big to download- and there is no index or link. But your answers make total sense- I could not work out what the + meant. |

Thank you. That helps tremendously to see additional images with the same or similar words.
I now think that the occupation for Karl Witt is most likely Landmesser = surveyor. No. 336 - Tochter des Kaiwen Verwalters Carl Witt = daughter of Carl Witt, administrator from Kaiwen Kaiwen (Kaive) [bei Tuckum (Tuckums)], which appears as the birthplace for Henriette in her confirmation record of 1890. Kaiwen was a Gut (estate) in the village of Kaive. (See https://www.redzet.lv/en/travel/sights/castle-ruins-manor/kaive-manor-gut-kaiwen) No. 2 - In this one, Carl is the Dondangenscher Revisor = inspector for the Dondangen castle or city. Henriette - aus Dondangen ib. Revisors Carl W[itte] = from Dondangen ... inspector Carl Witte ib. could be a Latin abbreviation for ibidem = "from the same place" |

Wow Bob, you are so skilled at this - the handwriting is so difficult to read- thank you so much for sharing your skills with me- you are very generous. It has made such a difference to my understanding of this family. Carl's brother, Ferdinand, my great grandfather, was a miller then a forester on a private estate, Seduva Manor in Seduva/Shadow where he and his siblings (and his children) were born to another miller.
I am 72 and have only discovered my father's family in the past 2 months, and it has been very exciting- I just wish my father was still alive to share it with. Dad and his parents and Carl's son Alexander were living and working in Harbin, China for the Russian Railways- they escaped the Russian Revolution and came to Australia in 1925, and he knew nothing of his background, which has turned out to be very interesting. And thanks to you, I now know much more. So grateful for your help. Barb |
